Fresh start

The popular picnic spot, End Point, has had a green makeover, thanks to Manipal University

Serene environs Students take in the sights in the newly-constructed garden

You feel as if you are in a pleasant world. There is greenery all around, a nice garden with smooth green grass, the Swarna River flowing in the valley below you, a parabola here and a parabola there, flowers of different colours shining as the sun i s almost setting.

The newly transformed End Point, thanks to the efforts of the Manipal University, is just the place you would like to be after a hard day’s grind. This is also the place where you would like to start your day with a jog in cool, calm, and serene surroundings.

Even before its makeover, students used to visit the popular picnic spot. But now it is a rage and the change is to be seen to be believed.

No one in their wildest dreams could have believed that it could be turned into so beautiful a place. Says Manpreet Cheema, a First Year student at Manipal College of Nursing from Chandigarh, “Earlier it was barren, now it is really wonderful. I come to the garden often to get rid of all my stresses. I feel like coming again and again.”

Her friend Sharanjeet Kaur from the same college says: “It is so green here and free from all the pollution."

Besides the garden, there is a football ground, a hockey ground, a cricket ground, and a 1.5 kilometre jogging track.

And the joggers are a happy lot. Yinyee Wong, a Third Year student of Melaka Manipal Medical College from Malaysia says: “I like jogging here. I also come here for a walk.”

Mahamad Shafiq, a first year student of the same college, says, “I come here for a jog in the evenings as I have classes in the mornings.” The panoramic view is an added advantage. Parikshit Padhi, a Final Year student of Kasturba Medical College from Pune says: “I enjoy the sunrise and sunset during my jog. The view here is breathtaking and it cajoles us to come here for a jog. A jog here takes away all my tension. Besides jogging, I and my friends also play football at the ground.”

It is not just the students, even the professors at Manipal University, it seems, cannot resist going for a walk at the End Point. Says the Pro-Chancellor of Manipal University H.S. Ballal, “I come here every evening for a walk with my wife.” On future plans at End Point, he says, “We intend to build a cricket pavilion, and start coloured fountains at the garden here. The garden will be thrown open for the general public.”
