An all rounder Apples build defence mechanism and bring in good spirit

An apple a day may keep the doctor away but it also helps build our defence mechanism and bring in good spirit.

During the launch of Washington Apples, Feng Shui expert Geeta Kapoor said, “Placing some fresh red apples in your home either on the dining table or the coffee table will drive out the negative ‘chi’ that brings arguments and disagreements among family members. It can even keep you away from a divorce”!

Healthy fruit

On a nutrition scale, an average sized apple has more fibre than a bowl of oatmeal or most cereals. One apple has five gm of fibre.

The fibre helps in digestion and also promotes weight loss. Apples and apple juice help protect arteries from harmful plaque and reduce the risk of both coronary heart diseases and cardiovascular diseases. Apples lower blood cholesterol, improve bowel function, give protection against prostate cancer, diabetes and asthma. Recent studies suggest apples may provide a ‘whole body’ health benefit.

Five varieties

Incidentally five types of Washington Apples have hit the Indian market – Red Delicious, Golden Delicious, Fuji, Gala and Granny Smith. Red Delicious is shiny red, and the most favourite eating apple, mildly sweet and juicy. Golden Delicious can be used in salads. Fuji has spicy sweetness, firm flesh and is known as the “eating apple of 21st century”. Gala is yellow to red in colour, rich in flavour and delightful.

Granny Smith, is green in colour, crisp and juicy, and is good for salads and cooking. Red Delicious accounts for about 90 per cent of the total imports in India.

Perennial

Washington Apples are available off the shelf at select retail outlets across the country. Like our favoured Shimla apples, Washington Apples too can be handpicked to suit one’s taste and requirement at a price ranging from Rs. 100 to Rs. 200.

The apples are available throughout the year. Washington Apples are brought and marketed in India by the SCS group.
