Shankar Sawhney gets Glassy!

Punjabi pop singer Shankar Sawhney launched his seventeenth album ‘Glassy’ in New Delhi this past week. After almost two years of preparation, the album was released simultaneously in the U.S., Canada and the U.K. It features 10 compositi ons, out of which eight were recorded in UK and two in India.

‘Glassy’ has been produced by Teg Sandhu of Tegson Group of Industries, under the music direction of B2 from the U.K. The album was created keeping in mind the immense international appeal of this music genre, especially among the Indian diaspora abroad. The album boasts mostly dance tracks infused with elements of hip hop, bhangra and sufi music.

Classical roots

It was an “inevitable shift” for Sawhney from chemical engineering to pop music. A trained classical musician, he always attempts to incorporate the classical roots in his music. But has the western influence tainted this form of music? Sawhney responds, “It is only through such innovations that we are keeping classical Punjabi music alive.”

Talking about the downside of fame, he says, “The most difficult part is the struggle and lack of security. It is very important for a singer to have his own hit album or it’s all over. All the winners of talent hunts on television acquire instant fame but are not given any importance afterwards. It’s a question of being famous one moment and a pauper the next.” He has dabbled with playback singing which he calls “a different ballgame altogether”. He has also acted in a Punjabi film, which would release soon. Sawhney has performed in more than 1000 stage shows in India and abroad.

As a pop artiste, he feels his USP is his “versatility with languages and good dancing skills for stage performances.” But is ‘Glassy’ another pop album by yet another pop artiste in a withering music industry? One will have to wait and watch.
