Waiting in the wings

A young cricketer awaits his turn to make it big

Ready for action K.R. Sethumadhavan

He is an upcoming cricketer in the State. He is scoring runs with absolute ease. And, he could well be knocking at the doors of big time cricket for Tamil Nadu. A lot has been spoken about K.R. Sethumadhavan, a stylish right-hander from Coimbatore, this year. It is not only for his sheer brilliance but also for his consistency.

The 19-year-old could not have hoped to do better in the 2007-08 inter district matches. He scored well over 500 runs from the seven matches that he had played. These included two centuries (against Thoothukudi and Kanyakumari) and three timely half tons.

Sethumadhavan not only did the talking with the bat but also polished the ball well to pick 21 wickets. His best performance was five for 60 against Thiruvallur. And, that saw him emerge as the best all-rounder cricketer.

Good show

It was due to his face saving knocks that Coimbatore managed to wrest the under-19 title after a gap of almost 15 years. “If I was able to do well this year, it was mainly due to the efforts of my coaches A.G. Guruswamy and Vinod. My parents have also played an important role in my performance. I have worked hard on my fitness and skills, and had even increased my practice sessions by an hour,” said Sethumadhavan, who also played for the under-25 Combined Districts.

The rising cricketer is happy with his performance this year because he was simply not among the runs in the last season. “Last year, I was constantly getting out in the 70s. Also, centuries were hard to come by. However, this time around I managed to score a century pretty early,” he added. He said he worked out on a simple strategy of playing the ball to its merits and according to the situation. “In any given situation, I have always played in a very positive manner.”

Sethumadhavan now yearns for a berth in the State’s Ranji squad. “I am confident about that this year because I have played from the u-15 to u-19 levels for my State. Also, the selectors have been watching my performance. I hope I am lucky this time around because luck is an important factor for any cricketer”, he concluded.
