Mahatma Gandhi has evoked a number of biographies, but it is a totally different experience hearing a string of anecdotes from someone who worked extremely closely with him. V. Kalyanam, who was personal secretary to the Mahatma, held the audience
217;s attention completely with his stories during a recent meeting of the Madras Christian College’s Madras Chapter of the Alumni Association.
“I have never encountered such a taskmaster before,” he said, recalling the Mahatma’s meticulous and fastidious ways. Talking about his last days, he said the Mahatma refused to have security inside Birla House against the advice of the police.
Old newspaper cuttings and other memorabilia were on display at the meeting, held on the lawns of the Madras Gymkhana Club. Attended by over 100 members of the Alumni, the meeting was addressed by President Prakash Stephanos. Prem Menon, Treasurer presented the accounts and Secretary M.C. Mammen presented the annual report.
