New set of dictionaries
A first of its kind, a Hindi-English and English-Hindi dictionary has been launched by Penguin in association with Yatra Books. The dictionaries come in a set of three, which consists of a English to Hindi dictionary, Hindi to English dictionary and a Hindi-English thesaurus in a slip-case. It is priced at Rs. 3,999. Arvind Kumar and his wife Kusum Kumar have compiled the dictionaries. They are also co-authors of “Samantar Kosh”, a Hindi thesaurus. Arvind started as a freelance journalist and has been the editor of “Sarvottam”, the Hindi edition of Reader’s Digest and “Madhuri”, a Hindi film fortnightly
Arvind also has a range of Hindi translations of famous works to his credit. It took the couple almost three decades to put together the dictionaries.
The compilation is exclusive in many ways as it is the first ever dictionary consisting of 548,330 expressions half in English and half in Hindi with cross references to similar or opposite concepts. It also includes cultural variations of the words in both languages. People who use either Hindi or English or both and need to improve vocabulary of either will also benefit from the dictionaries.
