INNOVATIVE VENTURE Artists at the exhibition

Forty-seven renowned artists, one place and some great works. Welcome to “Received Call,” an art exhibition at Gallery Mementos. An innovative venture, it aims to provide a common platform for artists in Puducherry. The 11-day exhibition includes creations of masters such as M.F. Hussain, K.G. Subramaniam, Jogen Chowdhury and Chandra Bhattacharjee.

“It has been my dream to launch an open art gallery. We want to create an ambience conducive to art in Puducherry,” says Bibekananda Santra, the curator of the gallery and freelance artist.

He is working towards it along with the gallery’s director Rahul Dugar and prominent artists of Puducherry Akmal Husain, Manoj Dixit and Prabhat Biswas.

Says Santra, “We felt the need for a platform for local artists, not only to display their creations but also to sell their artworks.” The gallery would be setting up branches in Bangalore, Mumbai, Delhi and Kolkata.

“Puducherry is an ideal place for creative pursuits. But artists here need to interact more among themselves and better exposure,” says artist Akmal Husain.

According to Manoj Dixit, “While galleries in cities such as Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Chennai, promote local artists, the same doesn’t seem to be happening in Puducherry. Local and up and coming artists will benefit from this exhibition.”

But why the title “Received Call”? Says Dugar, “It can mean different things. Artists were looking for a gallery and we received calls from them. We wanted big artists to support us and approached them, so they received calls from us. Basically, we wanted a unique title for the exhibition.”

The gallery will next hold “Call Waiting” an exhibition of paintings by reputed artists from India, Paris, USA and the U.K.
