The system of self assessment of property tax is not a new arrangement. Self assessments have been done previously too. It will reduce the burden of tax officials. Property owners will have moral responsibility in assessing their property judiciously. Also, the revision of property tax is overdue. It was last done a decade ago. The civic bodies are finding it difficult to attend to civil and development works in their respective towns because of paucity of funds and have to depend on the State/Central Government for assistance.
