Self assessment of property tax is a welcome move. This system should be exploited by urban local bodies for better use of urban governance. It provides low rate of property tax to make it acceptable by the public at large. It minimises the discretion/malpractices on the part of assessors in tax levy; makes the process of assessment and levy collection transparent and simple; ensures equity between classes of tax payers and property owners and facilitates self assessment by property owners and occupiers. Some officials and experts believe that self-assessment could lead to a more transparent system. Bangalore and Hyderabad Corporations have reportedly shown substantial increase in revenue after implementing this system. I hope that self assessment system would create awareness about calculation of property tax.
