Annual festival
Pydithalli Ammavaru’ has been the deity for the rulers of Vizianagaram since time immemorial. An annual festival of the Goddess is held amidst much fanfare every year. The festival is held a few days after Dasara. Devotees throng the town from
far-flung places to have a look at the ‘Sirimanu’. The ‘Sirimanu’ which comprises a huge log, symbolises the deity, and is taken out in a procession from the temple to the fort. The ritual is done thrice.

Anglican churches
The Anglicans under the patronage of the British settlement in Vizagapatam, built the St. John’s Church in the fort area in the Old Town and the St. Paul’s Church near the Waltair Club, some time by the end of the 19th century. Both the c
hurches were built for the European worshippers. The engineer who helped build the St. John’s church was none other than Sir Arthur Cotton.
