Winning voice
Sulabh Nagpal
Sing with Sonu, yet another music reality series in the ever-increasing plethora, found its Delhi winner in Sulabh Nagpal. The show organised by Big 92.7 FM, conducted both on-air and on-ground auditions in Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata and Chandigarh to select the finalists. Five winners, one from each city, will now get to perform live with Sonu Niigaam, between April 16 and 20.
Bollywood aspiration
Nagpal, one of the four finalists from Delhi, is a 19-year-old B.Com student from Bhagat Singh College. A trained classical singer, he was suggested the Big FM contest by a friend as a joke. He auditioned on-air and was short-listed by a panel that included Pooja Bedi, singers Shibani Kashyap and Aakriti Kakkar of Johnny Gaddar fame, Dr. Zeus and music composer Gaurav Dayal. The final selection was through audience votes, which Sulabh won with a total of 15,346 votes.
Celebrating with family and friends at the Big FM station, Nagpal reveals his aspiration of becoming a Bollywood playback singer. Although there are no ongoing talks, he plans to release an album by end of the year. A huge fan of Mohammed Rafi, Kishore Kumar, Shaan, KK, Udit Narayan and, of course, Niigaam, he plans to concentrate first on the upcoming concert.
Asked about the lack of recall factor for most reality show winners, Nagpal believes he may be able to buck the trend. “My advantage I think is my versatility. And I hope my journey will be long and eventful,” he says confidently.
Aamir Khan, one of the four finalists, feels that despite the criticism for reality shows, they provide a huge platform for a lot of people based on a democratic format. “They are meant for those who want to make it big and are looking for opportunities to fulfil the dream,” he says. The other two finalists were Amit Sagar and Bhaskar Jha.
