Notes of pride!
As part of the annual Baisaki celebrations, Delhi’s Sikh community has been promoting a unique contest for the last four years.
This year’s ‘Singh and Kaur of the Year’ pageant was held at New Delhi’s Pragati Maidan this past Saturday. The 32 contestants were judged on the basis of four rounds.
The winners of the pageant were Amritpal Singh and Jasmeet Kaur. The first runners-up titles went to Gurjeet Singh and Sahib Kaur while the second runners-up were Ramanpreet Singh and Pawandeep Kaur.
The other highlight of the evening was a fashion show by designers from ‘Beards and Turbans’ Fashion House and a performance by chief guest Ishmeet Singh of Voice of India fame. “The greatest reward for the winners is the recognition they stand to earn through this platform which will open fresh avenues for them,” said Dilvinder Singh Narang, President of International Council of Punjabis.
He added that the show was a reflection of the growing concern in the community over an increasing number of young Sikh men shaving their beards and rejecting the turban.
