At a time when choking traffic and honking horns are all that we get to experience in the city, the only places where we can relax are the parks that dot Puducherry.

With the scorching Sun turning harsher by the hour the only things that seem to offer respite are the tall trees, beautiful lawns and cool environment in public parks.

With everyone looking forward to seeing some greenery, parks have become a regular attraction not only for tourists but also for residents. And, if it is the weekend, a holiday or a festival, everyone seems to be making a beeline to the parks. “Whenever we come to Puducherry, we visit the Bharathi Park without fail. We stay for two hours while the children play. The environment is very relaxing,” says Rasiya from Villupuram.

Latha, who visits parks regularly with her kids, says that with reduced space in residential areas, parks are a great option for kids to play.

The Puducherry Municipality manages over 10 parks, while the Forest Department has six parks to its credit. And now, the Forest Department is in the process of creating two more parks. “Works are on at Bharathidasan Nagar and Rainbow Nagar. We will be completing them within six months,” says P. Devaraj, Conservator of Forests.

At present, the Department maintains parks at Lawspet, Osuteri, Kurumapet, Jaya Nagar and Nettapakkam, and another at Karaikal. “Parks have become huge attractions in Puducherry. The response has been excellent and people linger on till closing time. Parks provide a break from monotony. Greenery always comforts the mind,” he adds.

The Department established the Children’s Park at Lawspet in 2003 bringing in different concepts to attract the crowd. “We landscaped it and introduced vegetation and playing space for children. Models of elephants and giraffes were also installed,” narrates Devaraj.

The new park at Rainbow Nagar will also have a walk path to keep the parents fit while their wards are at play.
