Rich heritage

Madurai has a rich cultural heritage passed on from the great Tamil era more than 2500 years ago. The main attraction, Meenakshi Amman Temple is a fine example of Dravidian architecture with gopurams covered from top to bottom in a breathless profusion of multi-coloured images of gods, goddesses, animals and mythical figures. The Thirumalai Nayak Palace built in 1636 with the help of an Italian architect also boasts of construction marvels. Similarly, the Gandhi Museum, Mariamman Teppakulam Tank, Azhagarkoil, Tirupparankundram are all important monuments which need to be protected and preserved to maintain our link with the past.

R.ARUN KUMAR,

Madurai.
