Debut as composer Kavalam Srikumar

‘Devi Prasadam,’ an album of devotionals, has popular television host Parvati making her debut as a lyricist and playback singer and Carnatic vocalist Kavalam Srikumar donning the role of a composer for the first time.

“I composed several verses in praise of the Goddess at Koopakara Matom in the city. Nine of those verses have been set to music by Kavalam Srikumar. Initially, I was a little unsure of what I had written and so I showed the lines to Hridayakumari Teacher [B. Hridayakumari]. She was very encouraging and that motivated me to think about setting the lines to music,” says Parvati, quite overwhelmed by her new avatar as a lyricist.

Different experience

It was a different experience for Kavalam Srikumar too. “Since the verses were not structured as pallavi, anupallavi and charanam, I had to do that before composing the verses. The verses are an outpouring of devotion and each of the lines touch the heart,” says Srikumar.

“I will continue singing. But now I know I can compose if I want to,” he adds.

The songs have been tuned in eight ragas such as Sindhubhairavi, Keervani, Nattakurunji and so on and sung by 10 leading singers like Sujata, Shwetha, Srinivasan, Gayatri, Manjeri, Saindhavi, Madhu Balakrishnan and Srikumar himself.

The album will be released on April 23.
