HAPPY JOURNEY With your furry friends

Anyone who’s about to travel with a pet is probably anxious and understandably so. There’s paperwork, safety and accommodation to think of, for starters. Susan Smith, president of www.pettravel.com has put together a website that not only answers questions on these issues but also serves as an exhaustive bank of information on everything from health certificates required by hotels to seatbelts and carsickness. What’s remarkable about this site is how specific every piece of advice is. For example, it tells you exactly what your vet’s note needs to declare and outlines a checklist for air travel right down to the indelible ink you need to use to write your contact information on the carrier. “The site has been on the web for ten years and we’ve grown into being the foremost reference for passport and airline information,” says Smith who says the idea came to her when her partner who travelled extensively with his dog became frustrated at the lack of information on pet-friendly accommodation. Pettravel.com provides listings of hotels that accept animal guests and also directs you to other websites like therapydogs.com if you’d like to volunteer your pet’s company to bring some cheer to people who need it.

Another great source of advice is www.petsonthego.com, where they even explain how to avoid being short changed while booking a room, in the section titled “Not all rooms are created equal”. It lists the toys you need to pack, hygiene-related items you shouldn’t forget and miscellaneous things like a flashlight for evening walks. Following the guidelines in the Pet Emergency Kit section will make owners feel more prepared for the trip. Our pets follow us to the ends of the earth and these websites are all about how we can make that journey an enjoyable one not just for us but for our furry friends as well.
