Magic that defies logic

Can’t believe your eyes? Jadugar Anand performing a trick

At magic shows, the gullible have more fun. When a girl is suspended in midair, they think something paranormal is at work. They are simply awed by the action on stage. In contrast, the sceptics are bothered about proving it is just a great trick, and nothing more.

At a recent show by Jadugar Anand, a sceptic had prying questions for Sahana, who had been invited as a medium for a magic act. With eyes shut tight, she had heard the thunderous applause but had not known what it was for. Her grandfather K. Vaidyanathan had to tell her she was suspended in midair for a while. A hardnosed financial consultant, Vaidyanathan told the sceptic, “There appears to be something supernatural about it.”

There were other acts that distorted reality in a manner that invited similar responses. But the singular success of Jadugar Anand’s show (on at Kalaivaanar Arangam, 4 p.m. and 7 p.m.) lay in how the magic was packaged and showcased.

The magician’s son Akash says the grand stage, for instance, is the work of someone engaged in creating sets for Bollywood films. For three acts, scenes from films and a recorded video were screened. The expressions on their faces showed that Anand and his team believe in marrying dramatics with magic.

All magicians work to a formula and repeat the tricks they have been performing over the years. Jadugar Anand is no exception. Anyone who has been to his show the last time he was in the city would agree. The show begins with the same “Who is the greatest magician from India’ trick and ends with the one where he seems to fly.” But Anand has made a sincere attempt to add to the list. During his previous show, he made an elephant disappear. This time, the elephant appears. In another addition, a tall man is shrunk into a dwarf. No matter what you make of it, Anand’s world of make believe will have you glued to your seats. For details about the show, call 98947 00612.
