Stories by Satyajit Ray and Iranian writer Goli Taraghi will be presented by Theatre Nisha

Poignant drama From “Pomegranate Lady and Her Sons”
Theatre Nisha presents three short stories by Satyajit Ray (“Patol Babu, film star”, “The Pterodactyl’s Egg” and “Bhuto”) and three stories by Iranian writer Goli Taraghi (The Shemiran Bus, Pomegranate Lady and her Sons, and The Encounter) at Top Storey, Alliance Francaise de Madras on April 26 and 27 at 3.30 p.m. and on April 25, 26 and 27 at 7 p.m.
Theatre Nisha was formed in the year 2000 in order to tackle scripts and subjects that reflect a sense of social responsibility and adhere to the sensitivity of society. The group is also involved in working with schools, colleges, special schools and corporates to infuse the dynamism of theatre in their working.
Satyajit Ray is regarded as one of the greatest auteurs of 20th Century cinema. He directed 37 films including feature films, documentaries and shorts. His first film “Pather Panchali” won 11 international prizes. He was honoured with an Oscar for Lifetime Achievement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and a Bharat Ratna.
“Patol Babu” is about an amateur actor for whom a walk-on part in a movies turns into the ultimate challenge of his life. “The Pterodactyl’s Egg” is about a man who claims to have devised a way to travel economy class into the fourth dimension. In “Bhuto”, a ventriloquist dummy slowly but surely turns malignant and more human than its master.
Goli Taraghi is an Iranian prize-winning short story writer and novelist. Before immigrating to France in 1980, she taught philosophy at Tehran University. Her stories are populated with sick, desperate people who lead lonely lives suffused with fear. “The Shemiran Bus”, told from the viewpoint of a young girl, reflects the agonising uncertainties and obsessions intertwined with the new, conflicting feelings and urges characteristic of early adolescence.
“Pomegranate Lady and Her Sons” is about a chance encounter of two women in an airport that turns into a poignant, larger-than-life drama. In “The Encounter”, a social party for the narrator turns into an encounter with a ‘nemesis’ from a long forgotten past.
The cast includes V. Balakrishnan, Varun Aiyer, Naresh Kritika Ravi, K. Brindaalakshmi, Sumukhi Suresh, Prateeksha Chandrasekaran, Gayatri Kandhadai and Varsha Varadarajan.
