Interview Hair colours rule stylist Stephan Zenz’s world

Style guru Stephan Zenz

Hair colour reflects character, believes Stephan Zenz. Guiding a roomful of trainees through a maze of hair styles, this international hair care expert says that hair colour is the key to looking fresher, healthier and beautiful, “if it blends well with one’s skin tone.”

Zenz, who has an impressive track record — he is trainer at Vidal Sassoon Academy, London, creator of looks for Italian Vogue and Laura Ashley Catalogue and leading Global expert on Asian hair — says it is vital to maintain a journal filled with one’s hair recipes. “I have 10 such books now, and refer to them for ideas.”

Zenz was here to conduct a workshop for the soon-to-be launched Bounce Style Academy that will train students in hair cutting, colouring and styling.

Colour codes

Talking about the trends this season, Zenz says, “Al the global trends can’t come in here. India has its own culture and should go at its own pace. But, colouring is going to be really big here.”

And, the hair stylist sees a new trend in India. “The men are becoming more style conscious and the women are lagging behind. In other countries, it is the other way around.”

As for the looks this season, he says that Factory Lyrics, Mineral splendour, Couture Allure and Wonderland are in. Factory lyrics, a dark hair colour with bluish, purplish, pinkish accents, lends men’s hair a soft look, and women’s hair a rugged look.

“These tones will look fabulous on Indian hair,” he adds.

Mineral splendour involves working with the natural flow with cool and warm colours. It works well if matched with the skin tone. This look has a lot of silvers and ashes combined with gold and iridescent red.

The cut for men is disconnected, flowing, softer and roundish, with hair length on the longer side, while for women it is long flowing, with lot of textures and fringes.

Women-centric

Couture Allure and Wonderland are purely for women. While the former draws inspiration from the 60’s with over emphasized shapes, the latter is inspired by Nature.

Traditionally, hair experts only had hair mousse, gel and spray as their tools, but now there are mattes, conditioners, serums and loads of other products.

But, using these on your own without consulting a stylist is as bad as self-medication,” says Zenz, who has been visiting Chennai for 10 years now.
