Madurai is known for its strong historical tradition with many heritage buildings and temples in and around. Meenakshi Amman Temple is synonymous with the city’s strong historical tradition. Other noteworthy temples and heritage buildings are Teppakkulam Mariamman Temple, Tirupparankundram Temple, Gandhi Museum etc. They should be constantly renovated to maintaintheir ethnicity and cultural ambience. These are the spots visited by many tourists. Government fails to notice and maintain many of the other historical buildings catering to the local people.

There are hundreds of other small heritage buildings on the outskirts of the city. The roads leading to these destinations should be properly laid. The temple premises should be maintained neat. This will attract many more tourists as well as local inhabitants. The development and maintenance efforts should be taken up by councillors, Panchayat unions, Rotary Clubs, NGO and all residents. They should render yeoman’s service to preserve the cultural heritage of Madurai.
