Augment revenue

Heritage buildings of Madurai satiate the aesthetic sense of people who adore the architectural marvels of Meenakshi Temple. Besides providing visual feast, Alagarkoil with sylvan background, Lord Muruga Temple at Thirupparankundram, Naicker Mahal and Mariamman Teppakulam embellish and sanctify the city of Madurai with religious fervour. Apart from bearing testimony to the rich cultural heritage, tourists lavish praise on the architectural skill that erected high towers with awe and wonder. During those days when scientific temper was not advanced, our kings were able to construct temples of high class with an engineering mind. Even during the Sangam Age as seen in Silappathikaram, the formation and construction of streets around Meenakshi Temple known as "Nalangadi" is a clear proof of dexterity in the realm of constructive skill and design of our forefathers. To keep the sanctity of heritage buildings, renovation work must be undertaken periodically by the Government. If the renovation of heritage structures is done on regular basis, the sound and fury of nature cannot ruin the man made wonders, and it will augment revenue from foreign tourists.

K. Ramachandran,

Madurai-625019.
