Glory of the past
Monuments and buildings that stand out revealing the glory of the past are part of cultural heritage. Even during the time of Colonial rule, men of astute interest with an esteem sense of art and admiration for history like Lord Curzon recognised the necessity of conservation of what they identified as heritage of this country. The Indian National Trust of Art and Cultural Heritage (INTACH) recommended in 1989 to list all notable buildings constructed before 1939 that survived in anything like their original condition and have significance in Indian history, architecture and archeology as heritage buildings. Madurai has many such accolades like Meenakshi Amman Temple, Naicker Mahal, St. Mary’s Cathedral, Gandhi Museum, etc. Each stone of these structures has hundreds of stories to tell, of heritage, cultural evolution and stories of those who constructed the civilisation over the years for us to inherit.
