Cool splash Though not very safe, a splash once in a while in the shallow areas of the bay could be energising

Summer is back, and it’s time again to think of how to beat the Sun God’s fury. Beating the heat is not just related to how to get away from the soaring temperatures but it also means how to avoid certain diseases like heat strokes and he at cramps. The ailments are directly related to the soaring temperatures and one has to devise his or her methods to stay fit and cool.

Heat stroke is a common phenomenon and it results from the sudden change in the internal temperature of the body. It occurs when the internal temperature in the body climbs up beyond the normal level and the sweating mechanism fails.

The symptoms look like sudden rise in body temperature, dizziness and nausea, dry skin, no sweating, severe headache and strong pulse rate. There are chances of even complete blackout at times.

Summer is an annual phenomenon and there is nothing special about it. The only thing that one has to do is to take certain precautions, make a slight change in the lifestyle and enjoy the season. Along with the scorching heat the season also brings a lot of fun. The children have long holidays and it’s time for a family reunion, as relatives take the opportunity to meet at the family homes.

The best way to tackle the heat is to go back to a few traditional methods. Here are a few dos and don’ts: Eating out and spicy food should be avoided.

Stick to a light diet with more of lentils and green vegetables. Soak the mangoes in water for quite sometime before having a bite. Intake of fluid should be increased considerably.

At least five litres of fluid in the form of fresh juices, plain water, lemonades, buttermilk and traditional sherbets should be the intake.

Increase the number of baths or at least sponge the body whenever you get an opportunity.

Try to stay indoors, especially during the peak hours between 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. A lot depends on the activities. Keep away from activities that put you under the sun for long hours and cut down your daily exercise routine. A visit to the beach or to a park with water bodies in the evening would have a cooling effect both on the body and the mind. An hour in the swimming pool would work wonders to reduce the body heat. Though the sea is considered to be unsafe an occasional chill out in the shallow waters with friends does a word of good.

Fashion

Come summer and the best of the cotton wears should be pulled out of the closet. Make your fashion statement with cool cottons and flowery designs. Loose fit is the order of the season.

Both for men and women the trend in vogue is fusion wear. In the informal front denim trousers go well with kurtis or short tops, and in the formal wear the rage is cotton trousers with light coloured shirts for men and denim long skirts or capris with tops or simple salwars, are for the women.

Whatever, you wear, leave no skin exposed to the sun. Liberal doses of sun tan lotion can work miracles on the skin. A dash of cologne or moderate spray of deodorants not only keeps the body odour at bay but also gives a refreshing touch.

It is summer time, follow the tips and beat the heat in style.
