Most of the songs have been heard by us repeatedly over the years but then they are so good that they do bear repetition and one doesn’t mind at all. The CD opens with Lata’s all too famous ‘Allah Tero Naam’ song picked up from film Hum Dono, followed by ‘Tum Karuna Ke Sagar Ho’ by Jagjit Singh, Anup Jalota’s delightful ‘Jag Mein Sundar Hai Do Naam, Chahe Raam Kaho Ya Sham’. Two other songs of Lata include ‘Payoji Maine Ram Ratan Dhan Payo’ and the low key ‘O Palanhare’.

You can never tire of hearing Hari Om Sharan, a voice so full of piety in ‘Tera Ramji Karenge Beda Paar’. Jagjit Singh’s ‘Patita Pawan Naam Tharo’ is a thoughtful inclusion. Pandit Jasraj in his ‘Hanuman Lala’ is a pure delight to hear. A pleasant surprise is Sharma Bandhu’s ‘Jaise Suraj Ki Garmi Se’. They sing in such wonderful unison that there is tell tale evidence of their riyaaz.

While all this seems okay one is dismayed by the non-inclusion of the legend of all legends in singing, especially the bhakti and the bhajan variety. How can one overlook the incomparable M.S. Subbulakshmi. Can anyone replicate her Meera Bhajans? Sa Re Ga Ma had brought out an exquisite collection of her Meera Bhajans all sung in Hindi. Haven’t we heard her lovely bhajans like ‘Hari Tum Haro’, ‘Mere To Giridhar’, ‘Pag Ghungroo Baandh’?

Nevertheless this CD is worth buying, even though the price is quite steep at Rs.195. The recording is of top quality.
