A ‘Pastiche’ of sensibilities

Chaitanya Art Gallery celebrates its first anniversary with an exhibition

ARTISTIC Bose Krishnamachari’s ‘Stretched Bodies’ on display

Celebrating their first anniversary, Chaithanya Art Gallery in a well gathered function, saw the coming together of artists and art lovers. Showcasing 16 artists of various calibres and convictions on art, the show is enticing and luring. Titled ‘Pastiche’, it moves away from distinctly contemporary to those containing traditional aspects of fine art, of colours strong to those lulled by tonal variation.

Distinct styles

To start with, T. Kaladharan’s ‘Souparnika Smrithi, Orthic’ (as his other works previously viewed in other shows), he stands distinct to his own creation of paint on glass. Contained within his own atmosphere of works, and adopting a technique that attaches himself to the painting, the artist’s play of vibrant green, yellow and red merges to create an abstract formation in harmony.

This of course requires much credit, as the artist explains “once painted remains painted.” In a different light, is Bara Bhaskar’s ‘Document’s on the Marginalized’, watercolour on paper, its subject in point remaining the blend of tradition and contemporary approach in concept. The paper takes upon a cloth-like texture, the horizontal design of white and green accentuating it. Santhosh Lal Pallath, however, in his watercolour on paper titled ‘Texture of Desires’, throws forth a 3 D effect, using paints to provide texture, detail as well as a monochromatic effect.

Rathi Devi, an artist who had participated in other shows of the gallery, this time has used acrylic (on canvas) in a painting of dimensional quality. Although her work titled ‘Hidden Current Series’ does contain the luminous and transparent quality in her strokes-a noted feature of Rathi’s style, a graphic touch and geometrical picturisation proves her change in work. Rathi’s work definitely stands out amidst the collection for her fine play with acrylic and the attainment of transparency it can provide.

The only triptych, an untitled work by Tom Vattakkuzhy, it is visually attractive in terms of its depth and singular colour creation. In shades of blue, the work through subject portrayal (a face), in a pensive mood is strong, and tells the story by itself. Bhagyanath on the other hand, uses a self portrait to explain his deep concern of the environment.

A motorist that views change through his eyes, he says that his work is strongly influenced by a book that he once read: one that refers humans to caged animals.

Other works of mention are those by Rajan M. Krishnan and Bose Krishnamachari’s ‘Stretched Bodies’. Bose’s individuality stands out for the texture and strokes of colour that on close observation always is different. Other artists participating are K.L Leon, Anto, Josh P.S., Martin O.C., Manoj Vyloor, Murali Cheeroth, Radhagomati, Raghunath K, Rimzon N.N., Shanthan N. V., Santhosh Pallath, Sathyaanand Mohan, Sudeesh K. and Sunil A P.

The show is on till May 10.
