Kollywood's constellation of stars glittered at the Taj Coromandel Ballroom recently as top producers, directors, actors, musicians and designers turned out in style to celebrate The Hindu CinemaPlus supplement.
Director Shankar.
"The cinema industry in this part of the country is remarkable in many ways,
not the least because of the way it has nurtured talent, creating an enormous pool of
artistes, directors, cameramen, musicians and people operating cutting edge technology.
It has indeed grown far beyond what a purely regional market would normally
support and taken on a pan Indian character," said N. Ravi, editor of The Hindu,
speaking at the event. "The objective of CinemaPlus has been to bring serious,
high-quality journalism with accuracy, fairness and high values to the coverage of the
field." Actor Prashant was Mr. Punctuality for the evening, being one of the first of the
star contingent to arrive. Actors Nasser, Vikram, Madhavan, Dhanush, Narain, Prasanna,
Jeeva, Jeevan, Arun Vijay, Vincent Asokan, Karan, `Jithan' Ramesh and Sandhya,
directors Shankar, Gautam Menon, Sundar C. and Mysskin trickled in as the evening
progressed.
That made for a pretty star-studded crowd for stand-up comics Sethu and Sivakarthikeyan
from "Kalaka Povathu Yaaru" to do their mimicry of, you guessed it, various
stars. But they managed to draw some genuine laughs - especially Sethu's animated
impersonations of everyone from Raj Kiran and Cho to Sivakumar and Karthik.
Then, as Harris Jayaraj, Chinmayi and others from the music fraternity looked on,
singer Karthik displayed his versatility with first some classical bandishes (accompanied
by Stephen on the keyboards) followed by a soulful rendition of `Nila Kaaygiradhu'
(which had Vikram singing along) and the energetic Mitwa.
Emcee Mamathi Chari tried her hand at a live version of the Grill Mill column to
round off the entertainment segment, but the evening wasn't over yet as stars
continued to come in - the guys of Chennai-28 came in en masse towards the latter
half, and actor Namitha redefined `fashionably late' with her entrance, well, almost at
midnight. And the conversations continued - photographer Venket Ram and actor
Narain discussed what their choices for the Love/Hate column would be, and other
members of Chennai's glitterati got to catch up on who's been doing what this summer.
For Taj Coromandel's General Manager Arindam Kunar, this was a chance to
reaffirm the relationships the hotel has built in the last 34 years. "We've been
associated with The Hindu since the day we started in this city," he said. "And given our
long relationship with the film fraternity - many of them regular patrons at our
restaurants - we're honoured to host this party."
