Pain in the neck
School admissions have become a headache. Parents stand in long queues from previous night in order to procure admission forms in some of the sought after schools in big cities. In places like Tiruchi, the situation is not so bad as a wide range of options is available. Still finding a school with experienced teachers, adequate amenities, safe transport, appropriate teacher-student ratio and reasonable fee, is a tough call. Commercialisation of nursery, primary and secondary school education system is one of the reasons which prompted the Government to appoint Muthukumaran Committee. The committee has recommended segregation of Tamil Nadu into different zones. Hence, the Government should standardise the syllabus, fee structure, student- teacher ratio , minimum student amenity etc. at least at the proposed zonal level. The schools’ role should be restricted to educate the children and not to run multi-purpose shops. Otherwise, the ordeals of the parents during admission time will never end.The aesthetic factors alone should not be the criteria for choosing a school. The parents must ensure the availability of qualified teachers, spacious class rooms, proper student-teacher ratio, manageable syllabus, safe transport facilities, good environment and minimum basic amenities.
P.K. RAMAN,
Tiruchi.
