Lesson learnt
The recent violation that erupted in the city over the desecration of the statue of freedom fighter Pasumpon Muthuramalinga Thevar followed by damage to transport buses and public properties is a lesson to the Government for freely allowing statues to be installed in public places. While these are cases of encroachment, it is surprising how police and civic bodies do not take cognizance of it. It is high time, Government took a decision whether or not to allow statues and frame norms on their installation. If any political party or a communal sect is allowed to erect a statue, besides annual licence fees, due undertaking is to be obtained that they would take full responsibility to maintain and protect the statues or idols installed by them and not indulge in violent acts.
