step this way to glory Young dancers take the stage in numbers this weekend
It is a busy weekend for young classical dancers. As the sun gets brighter and much of the city’s privileged think of retreating to cooler climes, or at least the comfort of air-conditioned protection, dance students across the city are sweatin
g it out harder than usual.
While the annual programmes of dance schools are a mixture of work and play, there is another category that shines while the sun shines: those youngsters who have decided to take dance as a profession but have yet to make a name for themselves in the field. For them, the summer months, when the cultural calendar is marginally less choc-a-bloc, provide opportunities to present solo and group shows.
This past Friday Kathak dancers trained by the eminent Shovana Narayan put their best foot forward at the Amphitheatre of The Ashok.
And on Sunday it will be the turn of Odissi and Bharatanatyam aspirants.
Veteran Odissi exponent Kiran Segal presents the 12th Annual Day of her school Pallavi at the India International Centre, this Sunday at 6.45 p.m.
The young Odissi dancers have competition from Saroja Vaidyanathan’s Ganesa Natyalaya, whose students perform Bharatanatyam on the same day at Kamani auditorium from 4 p.m. onwards.
