Charting her route Rini Mukherjee
It is not often that one leaves a cushy MNC job to pursue one’s dreams. But Rini Mukherjee did just that. A post-graduate in Commerce and an MBA in Finance, she quit her well-paid job to do what she thought she was best at – singing. R
20;I worked for a year before realising I wasn’t meant to be here. Music always interested me, and I decided to take it up seriously,” explains the Kolkata-bred Delhiite.
She knew it would not be an easy journey, but Rini was prepared to fight it out. “I knew I have to face stiff competition, and having started my career late, it would be even more difficult. With no godfather or relative in the music industry, I have to rely on my voice to take me forward,” says Rini who started learning classical music from the age of 10. She is currently a student of maestros Rajan-Sajan Mishra, Pandit Jawala Prasad and Biswjit Chatterjee, from whom she learns Bengali Nazrul Geeti.
Live performances
To connect with her audience, Rini started giving live performances in light classical music and Nazrul Geeti. And when the time was opportune, she decided to come out with her debut album. She describes Ishq Kiye Ja, produced by Tips, as a melodic and romantic album, which echoes sounds from different states across the country. If “Koi Roke Na Mujhe” has the essence of Rajasthani folk, “Long Mare Mera Lashkare” is a typical Punjabi number. “There are eight original songs in the album, composed by Pandit Jawala Prasad and lyrics by Praveen Dutta. My album is not just targeted at youngsters but also the older ones,” says Rini. She confesses to having Bollywood dreams but isn’t looking to take that route for now. “I am sure my album will get a good response and help me get noticed. Also, sitting in Delhi, it is not easy to make contacts in Mumbai. Being married, I have to give quality time to my kids too,” she reasons.
Rini has already begun working on her next album, which is based on Bengali Nazrul Geeti. “I will start recording in a few weeks’ time. Being a Bengali, this is something that comes naturally to me.”
