Rocking at forty

Forty is the age when a woman has time to look into her own needs

Footloose Age is no bar to lead a hassle-free life

Life is like good wine. It mellows with age. That life begins at forty is no more an overstatement. A few decades ago, reaching that magic number almost spelt death knell, as it invited the tag of being finito. But the modern woman has learnt to rede fine her age with remarkable élan.

Trademark paunches have given way to sexy abs, wrinkles are disappearing and energy levels soar high. Birthday candles are no longer blown with a gloomy acknowledgement of being on the wrong side of the life.“My friends threw a bash to ring in the feisty forties on my birthday. It was a huge surprise and we were like a bunch of noisy teenagers,” recalls Geeta with a grin.

While in twenties, one is bogged down with marriage, in-laws, kids and other responsibilities. The 40’s are liberating, as the kids are grown and certain comfort level sets in with the in-laws and an understanding with the spouse.

Perfect stage

You have caring spouse and children at home, long-lasting friends to fall back on, a social circle that keeps you peppy and a work place where you’ve either reached the peak or just about getting there. Doesn’t it sound like a perfect life? Do you still yearn to be twenty? “No” says Sunita emphatically. “Touching forty is a great feeling.

I feel fresh as ever and wonder how ancient our moms were at this age. I have more time now for my beauty and fitness regime and I don’t think I ever looked better.

Varalakshmi echoes similar views. “I go out more often. Spending time with friends makes us feel like a 25-year-old chatty woman,” she giggles.

Syamala took up dance classes to make use of the ample free time she had in her hands. Satya has shed all inhibitions and is more confident after discovering that she can anchor shows.

Life does seem rosier at forty and the rainbow is just within reach, as there is so much to look forward to.
