METRO FORUM

Vote wise

With the elections to the Karnataka assembly scheduled to be held in three phases spread across the month of May, most people are apprehensive and sceptical about the process of elections itself and uncertain about the political drama that may be sta ged, once the elections are over. People strongly believe that politicians are interested more in minting money rather than working for the development of the region. MetroPlus asked people what qualities they would look for in a candidate fielded from their constituency. What factors would make them vote for someone in particular. Most voters hoped that candidates would be honest and take steps for the development of their constituencies and the State. They also called for strengthening anti-defection laws, providing voter IDs to all eligible voters and providing an option to recall candidates. Some even preferred President’s rule in the State to the unusual combinations undertaken by the parties in the coalition government.

The political drama witnessed in the State where three different combinations ruled the State over the past few years, has not only confused the citizens but made many persons staunch critics of the entire establishment and the parties involved in the polls.

The recent mechanisations by the politicians have made people apprehensive. Voters must be given a choice to reject all candidates. The power of recall should also be given. Anti-defection laws must be strengthened. The parties must focus on the real issues.

Elections are just an eyewash. Once they are elected to office, MLAs do not care about the problems of the people and become part of this ugly game for gaining power. I want the candidates to rise above caste, class, and regional considerations.

Elections have become a huge joke here. The parties have no ideological moorings.

Ideally, a candidate must be educated and must work on developmental issues. However, most of them are easily swayed by the leaders of their parties.

Srinivasan

Most of the candidates are corrupt. Last time, many MLAs switched their allegiance many times. The ideal candidate must involve in clean politics and must undertake developmental work. Vote bank politics must be completely rooted out.
