Eat right

A healthy digestive system not only ensures that we effectively absorb nutrients from our food, but is also extremely important for healthy immune functioning. Any food that is not completely digested, becomes useless for our body.

“Proper digestion is essential for the absorption of important nutrients like calcium, iron, and B vitamins. Stomach acid also serves as our first line of defence if we ingest anything in our food that doesn’t belong there like bacteria, viruses, and parasites,” says Ritika Samadar, Chief Dietician, Max Hospital, Saket.

Some of the suggestion for good digestion are:

•Slow down and chew your food, focus on completely breaking it down before swallowing, and pause before taking another bite.

•Take a slice of fresh ginger with a little lemon juice .

•Pre-emptive digestives such as as jeera, ajwain, hing, ginger, triphala and papaya should be incorporated into our daily routine.

•Cook with digestion-stimulating spices such as dried ginger, turmeric, cumin, coriander and ajwain not only to enhance digestion but to help flush toxins out of the body.
