In these days of instant management fundas and ‘quick-fix’ solutions to everything, Dewakar Goel’s book “Performance Appraisal and Compensation Management” provides a rare insight into the subject. Published by Prentice Hall of India, the book was released by Shabana Azmi and Javed Akhtar at the Oxford Book Store this past week in the Capital. Dewakar, who is a visiting faculty at several B-schools across the country, says, “I chose the subject as it forms a part of the curriculum for management students”.

Ask him about his ability to juggle responsibilities as a senior executive with his love for writing, a candid Dewakar gives credit to his wife. “Despite being a High Court lawyer in Mumbai, she gave up her career so that I could indulge in my passion for writing. Also, I maintain effective time management.”

The book tackles sensitive issues – such as conflict and emotional bias that affects performance appraisal – with critical analysis. Each chapter includes case studies based on real life situations. Separate chapters on communication skills, motivation and leadership styles are included in the book, which according to Dewakar are essential tools for appraising the performance of an individual. “It provides the foundation for appraising performance in an exemplary manner, with real objectivity. This will give rise to maximum productivity by exploiting optimum utilisation of human resource.”

Endowed with a strong literary streak, Dewakar, has already released three poetry books - “Sisaktey Armaan” to “Mere Bachpan Ka Chand” and “Mere Hissey Ka Suraj”. He considers the late Kaifi Azmi to be his guru. Among his other works is a thesis on stress in professional life “Living a Stressful Life with Joy” and a reference book on “Departmental Enquiries” .

Dewakar recalls, “Besides poetry, I have also compiled a story collection titled ‘Girti Deewaron Ke Beech’. My poetry book ’ has been released in Urdu as well.”

This is not surprising, considering that Dewakar, who hails from Meerut, has a strong penchant for Urdu, which reflects in his speech as well. Dewakar is also working on a book that will deal with issues of retirement in all aspects. “From financial planning to emotional, spiritual and psychological aspects,” he adds.
