Looking for a feel-good shopping experience with the best bargains that will not burn a hole in your pocket? Then, the busy streets of Puducherry should be your destination. You can pick up a range of products priced reasonably. The Sunday Market on Mahatma Gandhi (M.G.) Road is the best bet for shopaholics. With over 5,000 pavement shops, you could be spoilt for choice. Available areclothes, footwear, old books, plastic items and a variety of daily utility products.

According to shopkeepers, the Sunday Market, which opens at 8 a.m. and closes at 9 p.m., attracts a huge crowd. Apart from traders in Puducherry, those from Chennai, Chidambaram, Tindivanam, Panruti and Neyveli set up shops.

Another shopping hub is the J. N. Street. Take your pick from a range of stylish outfits, jute and cotton bags and trendy footwear. The street is dotted with both pavement shops and showrooms. Many youngsters throng this street to buy skirts, tops, pants and kurtas.

“I have been running a garment shop for the last two years on this street and have a regular set of customers,” says Murugan. Walk further down the street and you will find a row of shops selling colourful plastic flowers.

If you have a penchant for gold jewellery, visit Bharathi Street, Kosakadi Street and Nellumandi Street. Looking for electronic gadgets? Then Anna Salai is the best place in the town. A number of shops on either side of the road stock a variety of electronic items such as television sets, refrigerators, DVD players and the like. All the products in my shop have been bought from Delhi at a cheap price,” says Babu, who has been selling electronic products for the past 15 years.

Like Chennai’s Burma Bazaar, the 30- year old Goubert Bazaar in Puducherry sells CDs and DVDs of movies and songs apart from imported perfumes and clothes.

So the next time you are in Puducherry, you know which streets to visit.
