Shoppers’ stop The National Art and Craft Expo concludes on May 14

A sea of colours greets you at the National Art and Craft Expo at Suryakanthi Grounds. Shades of red, blue, green et al play kaleidoscope to the eye as the focus of the fair seems to be on clothes.

Lovely pastel kurtis with delicate embellishments, golden katha-worked Patialla bottoms and bright Chinese-collared kurtis with elaborate thread-work catch the eye. Wrap-around skirts and skirts with fabric printed blouses will give you the feminine look. Thread-worked ponchos or chiken-worked tops go well with jeans.

Have a look at the counter selling jute footwear with tiny straps. They will definitely look great with skirts and jeans. If you have a good tailor, check out the counter selling metres of Bhagalpuri silk from Bihar. Silky smooth, they come in lovely pastels as well as dark shades.

Saris galore

No handloom fair is complete without saris. This exhibition offers a variety of saris in silks, cottons and handloom.

For accessories, select from elegant stone-studded silver jewellery from Orissa, pearl sets from Hyderabad or chunky jewellery sets made of colourful beads and stones with Nature’s motifs. Jute or leather bags complete that urbane look.

Men need not fret. Kurtas in staid colours and prints are available, as well as readymade shirts and t-shirts. For children come ethnic wears in rainbow shades.

Want to refurbish your house? Look no further. The fair has everything from rugs and carpets to wooden images of Gods and Goddess. Delicate glass figurines of animals make great showpieces. Patch-worked bed spreads will liven up those bed rooms, while terracotta masks brighten up those walls.

Counters that are bound to be a hit with customers are the ones selling preserved fruits and pickles. While the one selling preserved fruits offers dried ginger, mango and gooseberry to name a few, the pickle counter from Rajasthan sells pickled garlic, bitter gourd, lime and green chillies.

A national-level exhibition organised by Agra-based Village Art and Craft Foundation, it brings you the best of handicrafts and handloom from across the country. The exhibition is on till May 14.
