Gourmet’s choice A submarine sandwich at Subway

The great thing about Subway is that it makes people who have absolutely no culinary experience whatsoever feel like Michelin-rated chefs, choosing from among a lot of exotic names and deciding on how much of what all goes into your sandwich.

At the new outlet of this international chain of sandwich joints that has opened on the Technopark premises, I got to choose between Italian, Wheat, Honey Oat and Parmesan Oregano; and that was just the varieties of bread. I went in for an oven-fresh loaf of Parmesan Oregano with seasoning herbs that had a killer aroma.

There are a whole lot of permutations and combinations that you can try out to get that perfect sandwich, seasoned and stuffed to your liking. Of course you could go horribly, horribly wrong but with the kind of choice you have it is a near impossibility.

Juicy bite

For all those who love their sandwich nice and juicy to the point of dripping, go in for the chicken meatballs in marinari sauce. Lover of all things Indian? Go for the spicy chicken tikka or sheekh. If nothing else matters but the amount of meat in between the layers, you will dig the Subway Club and the Italian Biggest Meat taster, stuffed with piles of lamb pepperoni, and lamb salami.

For a bit of exotic meat, try that turkey and ham. I chose a smoked chicken breast mainly because it sounded great.

And no, it is not non-vegetarian heaven. The vegetarians can stuff aloo patty’s, paneer tikkas and veg sheekhs in their sandwiches.

Now comes the other fillings. I would personally suggest loading up on the pickles and the Mexican chillies, but if setting your mouth on fire is not your idea of fun, then stick to the lettuce, cucumber and tomato slices and capsicum and ask for a liberal sprinkling of olives.

Be careful with the sauce. You do not want to sink the sandwich in mayonnaise or mustard. A couple of lines to top off the filling should do the job.

Biting into my fist thick sandwich, it was hard to avoid a sense of accomplishment.

Also, with no oil coming anywhere near the sandwich it did not put my health consciousness on a guilt trip.

If you want to keep your food lean and mean, you can avoid the bread and choose the same ingredients to be tossed into a nice salad. But if one hearty meal is what you are looking for, every sandwich comes in a foot-long version as well. Bite in from both ends and top it all with a cookie or even better, a chocolate brownie.
