Unconditional love Mothers always surprise us by giving just that little bit more

Your mother may fret or fume about your late-night parties or your latest multi-coloured hairstreaks. She may get paranoid about your long hours of phone calls. But, be it your professional problems that give you sleepless nights or the Monday morning blues, she seems to be the ultimate emotional outlet!

Most mothers would agree that motherhood is a puzzle that is yet to be cracked. For, this is one role that casts the whole life in a new shade and shape. It demands more than one ever thought could give. And mothers always surprise us by giving just that little bit more!

For this is the world of multitasking mothers who glide through the changing roles of life with uncanny ease, at the same time pare down their needs, allow their lives to be hijacked by their children.

It’s an acrobatic exercise, juggling the work at home and office, making up for broken promises to their kids, praying hard during their examinations, cooking up a white lie to shield him from Papa’s temper and putting up with teenage tantrums.

Only, the emotions remain the same, as it was a century ago, maybe even earlier. This year Mother’s Day is being celebrated on May 11.

History

Mother’s Day can be traced back to ancient Greece where celebrations were held in honour of Rhea, Mother of the Gods.

In Rome too, Cybela, a mother goddess, was worshipped as early as 250 BC. Known as Hilaria, the festivities lasted three days from March 15 to 18 — the Ides of March.

Seventeenth-Century England venerated the mother on the fourth Sunday of Lent (Mothering Sunday) when workers went home to be with their mothers.

Celebrations

So as you wake up on the ‘bright morning’ of Mother’s Day, remember that there are lot of things to ‘make your mother feel special’ on this day.

Give her a break from the daily grind. You can take her out to the hotels and dish out a lavish spread for her.

And for a gift mamma will be proud of and show all her kin until the next Mother’s Day, there are plenty of surprises awaiting her at the shops in the markets.

Household appliances, silver, gold or diamond jewellery, sarees and salwar-suits and myriads of choices to match the mood!

Remember though, long after the salesmen have convinced you and gone home with their bulging cash bags, your mother is still there.

After all, Mother’s Day happens once, but mothers, fortunately, are forever.

While the debate on trade interests and true spirit of the celebrations goes on perpetually, here are a few pointers that could help you to bring a smile on your mother’s face on the day.

You can surely gift her jewellery or saris she admired but even simple gestures on the day are enough to light her face.

Or brighten up her day by wishing her first with a steaming cup of coffee. You can also take her on a short evening out she had longed for. If cards are not her cup of tea, gift her cassettes of her favourite singers.

If time and economic constraint loom in large for grand plans, just a hearty admiration on her culinary skills while dining will be enough to lift her spirits.
