Have fun with ice

Healthy ice desserts are great in summer

Icy delights A cool treat

Holidays and summer heat make a frustrating combination for moms with children clamouring for non-stop treats and coolers. Stocking the freezer with ice-cream and fridge with cool drinks is fine, but consider the costs…not monetary, but the tol l of non stop sugary sweets on health. The solution? Make healthy but yummy coolers. This can be time consuming, but fun especially if you get the children involved. Boys or girls, most kids enjoy making fun foods in the kitchen.

The simplest and yet the most relished is ice-lollies. Make fruit juices, sweeten them to taste, (when frozen, the flavour reduces) and freeze. Pour the juice in ice-cream or Kulfi moulds, cover the open end with aluminium foil, insert an ice-cream stick and freeze. To remove, dip the mould in warm water and gently slide out. Fruits like pomegranate, water-melon, orange, lime, pineapple and concentrates like Raspberry can be used. Try using honey or brown sugar instead of refined sugar.

Another healthy iced desert or snack is yoghurt (curd) based frozen deserts. Blended frozen yoghurt is the lightest form of ice-cream.

Use yoghurt made of non-fat milk, blend well with a fruit and sweetener (sugar, honey or low-cal sweetener) and freeze.

Fruits like bananas, strawberries and raisins can be used.

Or add candied fruit bits, chopped nuts, chocolate chips…anything goes, as long as your taste buds approve.

Funskool has a cool gadget for kids of 3 yrs and above. An ice-crusher (Mr. Frost).

This plastic non-toxic ‘toy’ can be used by kids to crush ice to make slush or ‘gola’.

Just put in the ice-cubes, crush them, add a flavour and let the kids enjoy, and serve you with a flourish! This can be messy, but what’s a bit of mess compared to the child’s proud smile and sense of achievement?
