Power of films

Catch a movie on May 10, which is celebrated as Pangea Day, the day that helps people to see themselves in others, through the power of film. In 2006, filmmaker Jehane Noujaim won the TED Prize, an annual award granted at the TED Conference. She was granted $100,000, and more important, a wish to change the world. Her wish was to create a day in which the world came together through film. And, that is Pangea Day.

On May 11, Konangal Film Society will screen Brazil film Central Station, directed by Walter Salles, at Ashwin Hospital Auditorium. The screening begins at 5.45 p.m.

In Central Station, a cynical, joyless woman (played by the Brazilian actress Fernanda Montenegro) crosses paths with a lonely young boy, a 10-year-old (played by Vincius de Oliveira, who was discovered by the director in an airport, shining shoes).

These oddly paired characters develop a fractious bond that winds up profoundly changing both of them.

We see modern Brazil through the eyes of the characters: the long-haul trucks that are the lifeline of commerce, the sprawling new housing developments, the hybrid religious ceremonies, the blend of old ways and the 20th century. The film is about their journey and relationship. The director’s biggest success has been The Motorcycle Diaries. In 2005, Salles released his first English-language feature film, which is also his first Hollywood film, Dark Water. In 2003, Salles was voted one of the 40 best directors in the world.
