QUICK TIP

Focus on training, not chatting

It is not uncommon to see people chatting while doing their aerobics on the treadmill. However, science says that it is best if you put an end to that chatter which may actually hold back the benefits of cardiovascular training.

Scientists at the Wingate Institute in Israel found that when people worked on a treadmill while talking, “they had lower parameters of oxygen uptake (not good) and higher levels of built-up lactic acid (waste product) and carbon dioxide (all bad).”

The researchers concluded that talking during exercise may have a detrimental effect on your performance.

This is why good trainers insist that a gym should not be a place to socialise, but one where you build your body to face the rigours of a busy daily schedule. Find some other time to socialise; don’t do it in the gym.
