A treat will do the trick

Use reward-based methods to train your dog

Spare the rod You can train your dogs by luring them with rewards

Gone are the days when dogs were yelled at or physically punished in some way for their behaviour their owner did not like. This method of training instils fear in the dogs, leading to mistrust. It does not bode well for a happy dog-owner relationship.

Friendly methods

A gentler and friendlier method of training is becoming popular all over the world.

It is called Reward Based Training or Positive Training.

It consists of rewarding a dog for behaviour we like and ignoring what we don’t like. It is based on the basic principle of how dogs learn. Dogs learn through association.

When training a dog, if you consistently reward it for a particular behaviour you like, the dog will quickly associate the fact that such behaviour earns it yummy treats! Whatever motivates your dog the most should be used as a reward.

Most dogs are motivated to learn new behaviour when offered tasty tidbits in exchange.

These treats should be used only while teaching new behaviour and should not be offered to the dog at any other time.

This helps make training easier and more fun.

Positive training methods can be used to teach dogs to sit, stay and come when called. It can also be used to train them to stop jumping on people or things, to get off furniture when asked to do so, to drop or leave an item when asked to, to stop nipping people and other such behaviour.

Train the pups

Training can be started when pups are as young as ten to twelve weeks . This will help them learn good manners at a young age.

A dog can be effectively trained to potty outdoors or in a designated area (housetraining or housebreaking) through reward-based methods. No yelling, no hitting!

It is important to choose a trainer wisely. Asking for the credentials of the trainer before you hire him or her is a good way to know if your trainer is qualified and has proper knowledge to help you train your dog. It would be wise to know if their training methods are gentle and reward-based.

Become a companion

Training techniques which do not cause your dog pain or fear will enable you to build a relationship of trust and friendship with your dog where you can enjoy your pet as a family companion for years to come. Reward based training strives to do just that.
