Ready to laugh?

Drive away the blues at the ‘Funny Festival’

Up for a giggle this summer? With six of Chennai’s best known directors joining hands to stage six comedies for the city’s first ever ‘Funny Festival’, a good old side splitting, stitch-inducing hearty laugh might just be coming your way.

Organised by young Amit Singh of ASAP Productions, (which, quite honestly, stands for nothing in particular we hear), a gleeful dash of irreverence makes everything so much better. So if you’re looking for flaming ideas, soaring ideals and teary speeches on achieving dreams, head right back to the foreign movie section of your DVD library.

“We are here for one reason and one reason only: entertainment,” says Amit categorically at a press conference in Zara to launch the festival. Explaining why he felt the need to bring directors and theatre groups together, he talks of how all of them have been working independently till now, despite having a similar goal — hooking new audiences.

Why comedy? Quite honestly, because it sells. Attention spans are getting shorter. One way to address this is variety. Hence, the festival plays are short, including one which runs for just twelve minutes. (Which is about how long it takes your nail polish to dry: Just to provide a point of reference.) With different directors, every production also has a different feel. And if you have asspire to move your melodramatics under the footlights, check out the workshop, at Alliance Française.

Tickets are available at all Landmark outlets. Buy them online at www.ticketnew.com. Call 98411-17773/ 98845-98863 for details.
