Very special hearts

Mothers of differently -abled kids are very special people

Motherhood is the greatest joy for a woman. But motherhood is also synonymous with pain, struggle and sacrifice. There is a breed of mothers whose resilience, fortitude and character surpasses all this . They are the mothers of physically and mentally challenged children. Undaunted, they walk the earth dignified, cool and unruffled. Drawing strength and courage from some strange and mystifying force they face things headlong. Sandhya V. Prabhu, whose 11-year-old daughter Remya is afflicted with cerebral palsy says, “We have no other way but be cheerful. I have trained my mind to be calm. Worrying about the future shall make the present depressing and shall hamper the development of my daughter who is learning new skills. I hope that my daughter shall acquire more skills to make her totally independent as an adult. Besides my spiritual background has helped me see things in a philosophic way. But worrying- no way. It is not in my agenda.”

Ten-year-old Ashwin is autistic. However, his mother Vidhya Ashok feels her son is a precious gift from God. “I was shattered initially but forced myself to remain calm. I had never heard of a condition called autism before. But instead of falling apart I busied myself by reading books and browsing the Internet on autism. My husband and me also attended a course for parents of autistic children at Nimhans, Bangalore. Somehow I am very optimistic that the medical researches going on shall find a cure for autism.”

The amazing attitude of Reena Lalu, mother of 17-year-old Antony M. Lalu afflicted with cerebral palsy is significant. Reena says, “Acceptance is most important. My world collapsed when my son was born. His hyperactive behaviour alarmed everybody. But slowly I accepted him into my life. Unless his parents accept him nobody would. Now after joining Raksha, Special School he has improved a lot and this gives us hope and courage. Instead of feeling betrayed and condemning my lot I thank God even for the smallest improvement in his condition. A special son like Antony has given me deeper insights into life that I would never have otherwise. I am a much stronger individual now.”

Sandhya, Vidya and Reena are just a handful of the countless mothers who refuse to be defeated despite the great tragedy. Their indomitable spirit and unflinching determination to transform their lives and those of their loved ones deserves our strongest commendations.

So dear mothers of special children our salutations to you.
