Salute to motherhood

‘Mother and Child’ celebrates a beautiful relationship

REFRESHING SNAPSHOTS The photographs highlight a mother’s journey

An artist, a sculptor and a photographer come together in a celebration of motherhood at Art World, Sarala’s Art Centre. ‘Mother and Child’ is a simple and sweet exhibition of their works, each exploring the mother-child relationship in his unique style and perspective.

Jjay Ppradeep’s photographs, all in black and white, trace a temporal sequence of sorts, beginning with pregnancy and then capturing moments between mothers and daughters (the photographs feature only women) as they age. The photographs, simply composed and softly lit, feature everyday women, who could be your next door neighbour or your co-worker, in everyday clothes, sharing a laugh or a moment of togetherness. That makes them refreshing natural snapshots of regular lives, though a few do tend to look rather posed.

The paintings by A.P. Shreethar are a complete departure from these subdued works and bring a needed splash of colour to the exhibition. Every canvas is filled with solid swirls and ribbons of bright colour — reds, blues, yellows and whites — that generate plenty of energy and movement. He uses giclée, digital media on imported canvas that gives these paintings a clarity and brilliance of colours you may not find otherwise. Look again, and you see the abstract form of a woman and child emerge from the colourful chaos on each canvas, and the result is a joyful, unusual salute to motherhood.

The rounded and smooth contours of the marble sculptures by C. Ravi Kumar nicely offset the sharp colours and strong lines of the paintings. Conceptualised by Shreethar, each small but solid sculpture features an abstract representation of the mother in various poses, protecting and cherishing her child within the circle of her arms. All in soft shades of red or green and speckled in white, these sculptures are gentle and playful, and perfectly round of this artistic tribute to motherhood.

The exhibition is on until May 20.

DIVYA KUMAR
