Car and bike questions? We have the answers

I am planning to buy a car and my budget is Rs 8-9 lakh. I am looking at the Honda City VTEC (non-airbag), SX4 ZXi or the Corolla HE. Which one should I go in for?

Abhishek

If you are not interested in airbags then we suggest you go for the Corolla HE. It is bigger than the City and the SX4. It is also more comfortable and gives good performance as well. The Corolla is a proven car and should give you a trouble-free ownership experience. Another car worth considering is the Mitsubishi Cedia Select, which is in the same league as the Corolla, but comes with more features than the base HE.

I am planning to buy a car within Rs 7 lakh. I have short-listed the Lancer, SX4, Swift diesel, Logan diesel, Verna, Fiesta and Fusion. I think all are good cars but my worry is their performance in waterlogged conditions. Can you please suggest three cars from my list which can wade through the maximum depth of water? Your suggestions outside my list but within Rs 8 lakh are also welcome.

Debabrata Datta

We would go for the SX4 in this case as it has huge ground clearance and big wheels which make it better suited for wading through deep water. The Fusion is also a good choice thanks to its high stance and ground clearance, but it can’t match the SX4 on all-round value.

I am planning to travel from Delhi to Varanasi by road; it will be helpful if you can give me the details of the route, the condition of roads and precautions to take.

Joy Joseph

The road from Delhi to Varanasi is via Agra, Kanpur and Allahabad on NH2. It is almost 650km and will take you about 12 hours, give or take a few depending on the time of day you travel. If you are confident about driving at night, the ideal time to leave would be around 10 p.m. and you’ll be in Varanasi by 9 a.m. the next morning. It’ll be a clean, hassle-free drive. Should you leave really early in the morning, you will avoid traffic congestion in Agra but definitely face it in Kanpur and Allahabad where the bypasses are not yet operational. Roads are good on the section where the Golden Quadrilateral is complete, but there are a number of diversions and the road through Allahabad is badly potholed.

I want to buy an SUV with good looks, ample legroom and a large boot to carry my luggage. We are a family of four and I will be using the car mostly on the highways; I travel at least 500km on weekends. I have short-listed the Safari 2.2 and Scorpio CRDe. I have driven both cars and I found that both are equal on performance. Which do you think is a better bet, considering my budget of Rs 10 lakh? Also, I have heard from my friends that Safaris are expensive to maintain. Is it true?

Nanda Kishore

We suggest that you go in for the Safari because it meets your requirements. The Safari is more spacious, with more legroom than the Scorpio and luggage space as well. It rides well on the highway and is a relaxed cruiser. With the new 2.2-litre engine and latest upgrades, the Safari hopefully should be more reliable.
