M.S. Sathyu and Ram Gopal Bajaj have plans for theatre enthusiasts

The three-week theatre workshop conducted by the National School of Drama in association with Qadir Ali Baig Foundation begins this evening. “The NSD has been conducting such workshops in collaboration with theatre organisations in different ci
ties,” says theatre person and film-maker M.S. Sathyu. The workshop will have experts teaching participants nuances of acting, direction, stage craft and lighting using the course material designed by NSD.
Ram Gopal Bajaj, who teaches at the NSD, is among the select few who will be in town for the workshop. Hyderabad isn’t new for Bajaj. “I taught at the Sarojini Naidu School of Fine Arts from July 2002 to May 2003. So far, my interaction has been limited to a few theatre enthusiasts and students in Hyderabad. This workshop will allow me to interact with more students, including some of those who have not had enough exposure to theatre so far,” he says. In fact, Bajaj has visited the city Hyderabad in 1989-90 as part of NSD’s national tour promoting theatre.
Comparing the theatre scenario in Hyderabad with that of other metros, Bajaj says, “Hyderabad needs to be given more attention. There is an enthusiastic turn out when good plays are conducted. But people don’t get to see different kinds of plays at regular intervals.”
The course material, which will draw from the best works of NSD, will focus on diction, dialogue delivery and acting. “The students, I gather, will be a mix of corporates, academicians and students of theatre. Some of them haven’t had previous exposure to theatre. Hence, the course material needs to cater to a mixed group.”
Director Sathyu is looking forward to focusing on the vital but neglected aspects of theatre — designing sets, lights and costumes. “There is more attention on acting and directing plays because of the opportunities it fetches you from television and cinema. But you need to know how to set up a stage and use the space available,” he says.
