Fitness instructor Yasmin Haz on Kareena Kapoor’s ‘size-zero look’ and how the right diet and exercise can do wonders for anyone

IN GREAT SHAPE Yasmin Haz says a combination of exercise and ‘healthy’ eating helps you keep trim
Fitness instructor Yasmin Haz walks into the room in a yellow leotard, hair tied up in a long ponytail. As our photographer takes his camera to click, she holds her hand up and says, “I’m sticky and sweaty after a long day and I don’
;t feel like posing. Besides, I have no make-up on.” Despite our various attempts to convince her she looks great, she turns us down.
Strict regimen
The mother of two boys aged 10 and seven, would give most women a complex because of her well-toned physique. A popular fitness instructor in Mumbai, Yasmin is said to have helped Kareena Kapoor gain the ‘size-zero look,’ for the Bollywood movie ‘Tashan.’
She says, “Actually, it is the media that has harped on the look. Kareena has worked out really hard. It was a mixture of a strict fitness regimen and diet control for her. If you notice, she looks fit and healthy in the movie and not anorexic. There is a glow to her skin.”
And that is the look Yasmin is trying to get from the contestants of Channel V’s ‘Get Gorgeous.’ One of the judges of the programme, she says the contestants start their day at 6.30 a.m. with brisk workouts.
“It’s like a boot camp. For them it’s a combination of exercise and ‘healthy’ eating. As they are in this profession, they should be able to withstand long and demanding work hours. The workouts are a mix of cardio, Pilates and resistance and functional training. Pilates are excellent strength-building exercises and great for the abs,” says Yasmin who works out two-and-a-half hours a day herself.
According to Yasmin, the girls were hesitant at first when they heard the words ‘workout and diet’ mentioned in the same breath. However, the proud instructor says her students are now the first ones who come for the sessions.
“Also the food we serve the girls is not diet food per se. Diet food is mostly boiled stuff. Here the food is cooked, but with less oil and spices.”
Asked if she follows the same diet, she says, “Of course. It’s always best to practise what you preach if you want others to follow you.”
Yasmin has her own gym at her residence in Mumbai, “as that’s how much of a fitness freak I am.”
She adds: “But I was never a fitness aficionado. In fact, I was on the plump side when I was young. It was a friend who dragged me to the gym for the fun of it.” Since then, there has been no turning back. Hooked on the idea of fitness, she started attending various fitness training courses.
