Heartfelt
There’s nothing called too much information, especially with regards to health. The rate at which different illnesses are spreading their web has necessitated the need for public awareness about them. Think about this: According to the World
Health Organization (WHO), 60 per cent of the world’s cardiac patients will be in India by 2010.
Keeping this situation in mind, Artemis Health Institute, Gurgaon, organised a public lecture that addressed the issue of cardiac diseases, and created awareness about symptoms, treatment and prevention.
The lecture was attended by over 200 people who shared their experiences with the crowd. It included patients who have successfully undergone treatment for heart problems.
The lecture also focussed on some facts and myths related to cardiac diseases. Some points to note were:
One third of patients with coronary heart disease have normal cholesterol levels.
It is a misconception that blood pressure rising with age is a normal concomitant of aging. Increased blood pressure is harmful, irrespective of the person’s age.
Risk of heart disease in ‘mild’ smokers is almost as high as in ‘heavy’ smokers. So, for risk reduction, smoking should be completely stopped and not merely reduced.
Risk of heart attack in diabetics with no prior heart attack is similar to non diabetics with prior heart attack.
But the event ended on a positive note, when Dr. Kushagra Katariya, CEO and Cardiothoracic surgeon, highlighted the latest advances in heart surgery. “Advanced technology and skill has reduced the risk of complications and resulted in improved outcomes of surgery, making it extremely safe,” he said.
