My kind of Place -- Renuka Shahane

Down to earth

I invariably choose plains over hills when I want to holiday. Lush landscapes, cool waters, sprawling beaches…are comforting. But heights scare the wits out of me. My hot choice in India is good old Goa and the stunning backwaters of Kerala. Lazy weekends in Goa are ideal for harried and hurried Mumbaikars. Enough has been said, written and heard about the unspoilt beauty of Kerala. What more can I add? I just hope it never loses its green charm.

Walk back in time

When I look beyond Indian borders, Spain fascinates me.

Despite winds of change sweeping the globe, the Spanish hold their heritage and culture close to their heart and display them with pride.

Also, I felt people here seem to living life to the fullest, straddling comfortably between the old and the new. I went visiting Barcelona, Madrid, Granada, Toledo and Seville with my travel buff sister and brother-in-law. There is so much to see for an eager tourist, museums, monuments, cathedrals and palaces. History comes alive wherever you go.

But if you are the kind who likes to sit in the hotel and eat and sleep well, the Spanish weather and ambience helps you do even that.

Culture trip

People still associate me with “Surabhi” and I don’t mind it all. After all, I had the time of my life anchoring that popular show on Doordarshan. I got to visit places that I otherwise would never have and meet traditional craftspersons who helped me link with our beautiful past.

The best part being I was able to share these unique experiences with so many people. I have to mention three “Surabhi” trips that will never fade from my memory — Kutch, Kenya and Egypt.
